Plagiocephaly: What It Is and How Physiotherapy Can Help

Plagiocephaly, often referred to as “flat head syndrome,” is a condition where an infant's head develops a flattened area on one side or the back. This condition is typically caused by prolonged pressure on one part of the skull, usually due to the baby spending too much time lying on their back. While it’s most noticeable in the first few months of life, it can be managed with early intervention, including physiotherapy.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy plays a key role in managing plagiocephaly, especially when it’s identified early. Physiotherapists focus on providing education, exercises, and hands-on treatment to help improve the baby's head shape and prevent further flattening.

1.    Education for Parents and Caregivers: One of the most important aspects of physiotherapy for plagiocephaly is educating parents on how to position their baby during sleep and play. For instance, alternating the baby’s head position during sleep or encouraging tummy time while awake can help prevent pressure from building on one side of the skull.

2.    Neck and Head Exercises: If the baby also has torticollis, physiotherapists can guide parents through gentle stretching exercises to improve neck flexibility and range of motion. These exercises can help the baby turn their head more easily and reduce the pressure on one side of the skull.

3.    Repositioning Techniques: Physiotherapists can also demonstrate safe and effective repositioning techniques that encourage the baby to look in different directions, preventing further flattening and promoting better skull symmetry.

Plagiocephaly is a common condition in infants, but with early intervention, it can often be managed or corrected. Physiotherapy offers valuable support through education, exercises, and strategies to improve head shape, promote healthy development, and provide peace of mind for parents. If you’re concerned about your baby’s head shape, consult a physiotherapist to get started on a personalized treatment plan.
